Ereban Fighting Styles

These martial arts have reached Erebus by way of immigrants and refugees from the Order of the Moth. There, peasants are not allowed to own weapons of any kind, so other methods of self-defense had to be developed. Instructing eager street predators and mercenaries in these techniques is an easy path to reasonable wealth for any Easterner who knows them.

Way of the Tiger

This brutal style focuses on direct, crushing attacks over any form of defense or misdirection. The goal is to take your opponent down as fast and hard as possible. Skilled Tigers can break wood and stone with their bare hands. After that, breaking people's arms is a snap.

Way of the Tortoise

Developed as a response to the brutality of Tiger style, the Way of the Tortoise gives combatants nearly unbeatable defensive abilities. The focus is on blocks and throws that take incoming attacks and turn them away, leaving the defender unharmed and unmoved. Once a Tortoise digs in, nothing can move him.

Way of the Fox

Another defensive style, the Way of the Fox teaches that the best defense is distance. Foxes never stop moving during a fight, constantly weaving, leaping, and ducking around attacks. It even includes a few acrobatic flips and rolls. A skilled Fox is nearly impossible to hit and can escape from any brawl.

Way of the Viper

A focused study of human anatomy will reveal a great number of weaknesses in the body's motor and sensory systems. Called "pressure points," these vulnerable spots can be targeted for a variety of debilitating attacks. Vipers learn how to blind, paralyze, and knock out opponents with quick, precise sequences of blows. Most effects are temporary, but easily last as long as most fights, and can be reversed at any time by someone who knows the Way of the Viper or an Eastern healing art.

Way of the Monkey

Named after the infamous "monkey dodge," this is a collection of techniques for turning an opponent's advantages against them. When fighting a group, monkey dodging allows a warrior to redirect attacks from one enemy onto another by dodging in front of the new target, then away. Monkeys can also grapple an enemy's weapon and turn it against them with deft twists, or throw them by using their own weight and momentum against them. Being repeatedly fooled and beaten by a skilled Monkey is a humiliating experience, not to mention painful.

Way of the Gun

This newest fighting style is an original creation of Erebus. Developed by an Eastern gunslinger, it teaches how to make gunmen miss shots and techniques for disabling firearms with quick blows and deft sleight of hand. To observers, it often looks like practitioners can dodge bullets and take guns apart with one hand. The Way of the Gun is popular among both gunslingers (who want an edge in firefights) and street predators (who want to even the playing field against armed opponents).
